Gaelic Medium Education (GME)

GME is available to all and involves the use of the Gaelic language for all learning and teaching in pre-school and primary. Learning a second language is so much easier to do as a child. The group is actively promoting GME for all ages in the area.

Some of the potential advantages are wider communication skills, cognitive benefits, raised self-esteem, easier to learn a third language and further down the line, economic and employemnt benefits.

What's more, most children in GME come from English speaking families. There's plenty of help available and opportunities for parents to learn Gaelic too. There is more info available on GME and parental support on our links page.

FAQ's

There is little known about the benefits of GM education by the wider population so we thought for those who would like to know a little more we’d answer a few of the most common questions.

Q: Does my child have to speak Gaelic before going to school
A: No. A lot of children entering GME do so from English speaking families and start at primary school with no Gaelic at all.

Q: Will my child get as good an education in Gaelic medium as they would in English medium
A: Yes. In a recent study it was proven that children attending GME had a higher educational standard than English medium.

Q: Will the setting up of a GME unit take away valuable resources from English medium schools?
A: No. The bulk of the money needed to establish a GME unit should come from Central Government and the Local Gaelic group has a small pot of money set aside to source and apply for external funding hopefully to cover any short fall.
